FRAMELESS CABINETS

Framed Construction Types
Once you’ve selected the construction style of your cabinets, the next step is choosing your door type. For framed cabinets, there are three primary options—Partial Overlay, Full Overlay, and Inset—each offering a distinct look and level of craftsmanship. The door type you choose will influence not only the appearance of your cabinetry but also the way the doors and drawers function within the frame.
Partial Overlay
In a Partial Overlay design, doors and drawer fronts cover only part of the cabinet frame, leaving a visible gap between each door. This traditional style is often found in more classic or casual spaces and allows for a bit more forgiveness in door alignment. It's a timeless option that blends well in transitional homes or where budget considerations are top of mind.

FULL OVERLAY
Full Overlay doors cover nearly the entire face frame, resulting in a more seamless, modern appearance. With minimal gaps between doors and drawers, this option creates clean lines and a more uniform, tailored look. It offers the appearance of a frameless cabinet while still maintaining the structure and durability of framed construction.

INSET *
Inset cabinetry is the most precise and furniture-like of the three. In this style, doors and drawer fronts sit perfectly flush within the frame, creating a clean and elegant silhouette. Inset cabinets require expert craftsmanship, as every door and drawer must be built and installed with exacting precision. The result is a refined, high-end aesthetic that speaks to tradition, artistry, and attention to detail.

Cabinet Door Anatomy & Joinery
Understanding the anatomy of a cabinet door is essential when selecting the right profile for your space. Most of the doors we craft at SCS Cabinets are 5-piece hardwood doors, made up of vertical stiles, horizontal rails, a center panel, and detailed edge profiles—each element working together to create the overall look and feel of the door. (Refer to the drawing to the left for a visual breakdown of these parts.)
We offer two primary methods of door construction: Cope & Stick and Mitered. Cope & Stick doors feature joints where the horizontal rails intersect cleanly into the vertical stiles, while Mitered doors meet at a 45-degree angle at each corner, creating a seamless, picture-frame look. Mitered profiles are considered an upgrade, requiring greater precision and offering a more refined finish.
In addition to our hardwood door options, we also offer MDF doors, which are ideal for painted finishes and can provide exceptional stability and smoothness. Every profile we offer is crafted with care and accuracy to complement your chosen door style and construction type.

Door Styles
At SCS Cabinets, we classify our Door Styles into four primary categories: Shaker, Flat Panel, Raised Panel, and Glass Panel. Each style offers its own distinct personality—from the clean, timeless lines of Shaker to the more ornate detail of Raised Panel doors. Flat Panel styles lean modern and minimal, while Glass Panel doors add light and visual interest, often used to showcase interior cabinet contents. Within each of these categories are a variety of Door Profiles—the detailed shaping of the inside and outside edges of the frame and center panel—that allow for even more customization to suit your home's architecture and your personal taste.
Door Profiles
Once you’ve selected your cabinet door style, the next layer of customization comes in choosing the Door Profile—the detailed shaping and construction that defines the character of the door. At SCS Cabinets, we offer an extensive range of profiles grouped by Door Style. Whether you're drawn to the clean lines of a modern flat panel or the intricate detailing of a raised or mullioned glass panel, each profile is crafted to bring your vision to life.
Raised Panel Profiles
Rich in depth and tradition, Raised Panel Profiles bring a more formal or furniture-style look. Options include Square, Half-Bead, Ogee, and Half-Bead Bevel designs, with the Beaded Raised Panel available as an upgraded, more detailed option.
Raised Panel Profiles offer the most customization options because not only can you choose the inside and outside edge profiles, but you can customize the center panel profile as well. Some of those options can be seen in the graphic to the left.
Wood Selections
Every cabinet begins with the wood itself — chosen not only for beauty, but for its strength, consistency, and character. We offer a wide range of wood species to complement both painted and stained finishes. Each one brings its own natural tone, grain, and personality, allowing you to select the foundation that best fits your design style.
When selecting the right wood for your cabinetry, the first decision is whether your cabinets will be painted or stained. Painted cabinets are typically crafted from durable paint-grade woods like birch, chosen for their smooth, consistent finish. Stained cabinetry, on the other hand, highlights the natural character and grain of the wood—so the species you choose plays a major role in the final look. At SCS Cabinets, our most popular options include birch, maple, white oak, and walnut, but we also offer a wide range of domestic and exotic selections including poplar, alder, hickory, cherry, cypress, mahogany, and rosewood. As a truly custom cabinet shop, we can craft your cabinet boxes, doors, and drawer boxes from the wood that best complements your vision.
